Merchant Art Hotel is a modern, basic boutique hotel nearby Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon’s #1 sightseeing attraction
Location-wise the hotel is within 10 minutes walk from the famous Shwedagon Pagoda. Kandawgyi Lake and Myanmar Plaza (Yangon’s biggest shopping mall) are also nearby, about 10 minutes away by Taxis costing MMK2500 (USD2) one way. However, downtown Yangon is slightly further out at more than 20 minutes away by car
Being so near to Shwedagon Pagoda, one outstanding feature of the hotel is the stunning views at night from its roof top terrace
My friend and I stayed at their Art concept room for around USD75/night. The room comes with a spacious living room, and a complimentary minibar offering expresso coffee and traditional Myanmar tea. Free WIFI is available throughout the hotel, streaming at decent speeds that allow watching of youtube videos without any hitches.
In-room amenities also includes a 32” LED TV (supports HDMI) with international cable channels. Another friendly feature of the room is the international plug sockets provided so no fumbling of adapters is required.
Breakfast & nearby restaurants
I was however quite disappointed with the hotel breakfast. Although breakfast is included in the room rate, being repetitive with the same spread of food every day can get tiring for guests quickly. Tables were also rather insufficient so the breakfast area can get a bit too crowded during peak timings
My recommendation is to take a short walk out to a few nearby restaurants for cheap yet quality food. A good breakfast option is Myaung Mya Daw Cho, which serves excellent Mohinga (Burmese fish soup noodles) for MMK600. For lunch or dinner, Burmese restaurant Aung Thukha serves a wide range of homemade local food at very good prices. This coupled with the old-school atmosphere makes the dine-in experience akin to eating at a Burmese friend’s home
Although my stay at Merchant Art Hotel was enjoyable and the hotel staff are very friendly and helpful, I’ll consider staying somewhere closer to downtown Yangon in the future as I’ve already spent adequate time this trip exploring Shwedagon Pagoda, Kandawgyi Lake and Myanmar Plaza
